dc.description.abstract | Arabic and Tamil as two prominent languages have their own sound system and symbols. Those who use Arabic as their second language need to search for alternative symbols in their native language while writing. The Tamil speaking Muslims who use Arabic face difficulties in finding alternative Orthographic symbols in Tamil language due to the non- availability of equivalent characters, corresponding to the Arabic sounds. This problem is greatly felt when writing and transferring the phonemes of Arabic religious literature, terminology and names to Tamil. The prime objective of this research is to design Orthographic symbols in Tamil language for the corresponding Arabic Letters. In order to achieve the main objective, this study identifies the problems encountered in the selection of the Tamil phonetic alternative for Arabic. The research focus on linguistic and contrastive approaches using qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The findings show that the Tamil speakers do not have a uniform system to transfer Arabic letters in to Tamil due to the non availability of a comparative alphabetical table between both languages. The result indicates that there is difficulty in pronouncing and writing Arabic proper nouns correctly among the respondents. This phenomenon brings a negative impact in determining the exact Arabic word and its meaning. This research constructs a model to list orthographic symbols in Tamil Language for the corresponding Arabic alphabet. Native speakers of Tamil may use this constructive model in writing and transferring Arabic terminology and words in Tamil in order to pursue uniformity. | en_US |
