Abstract: | The community-based correction (CBC) for offenders is in practice in Sri Lanka according to the law no. 46 enacted in 1999 in order to be subjected to the wrongdoer under the community correction laws than the imprisonment with the view to make them better citizens of Sri Lanka. However, the familiarity and significance of the law is lacking. Therefore, this study is to explore the development of the CBC laws and the challenges in applying the laws to the convicts. For this study, primary and secondary data were collected from various sources. Direct observation, interview and questionnaire administration were used to collect primary data. Records and statistical reports from Kalmunai Magistrate court has been used as the secondary source. The result shows the CBC application in the society is an efficient method rather that the imprisonment but the familiarity and the significance should be disseminated among the societies with proper mechanis. |
