Economic situations of widows – a sociological study based on Kommathurai West village

Abstract

Nowadays, Women have to face a variety of problems in the community, they are affected directly or indirectly facing individual problems, Family, school, Environment, Workplace, Religious Institutions and Religious foundation. In this context, it is necessary to find out the motivating causes for this issue in the society. In this way, the problem of the widows is considered as a social issue. Really this problem in the society affects not only the particular woman but also other women who live in the society. Moreover, it makes them economically weak and necessitated us to make a research on them. The mentally affected widows in the village are unable to bring up and look after their children, not meeting psychiatrist for their grievance. It is necessary to identify and make the needful livelihood opportunity for the widows who lost their spouse by war or for other reasons. If this primary action is not made for their survival, they will undergo economical crisis and many other issues by the widows and children. So this research on widows is very important. The research questions were: how the widows are affected by poverty at the Kommathurai West Grama Niladaies division and what kinds of the problems do they face in the society? Therefore, the aim of this research was to identify the challenges and find the solution for their problems and empower the widows headed families in the society. The data for this research was gathered by using questionnaires, interview and field researches. The data were analyzed by the manner of quantity and nature as a result of this research. It was identified that poverty was an influencial factor in the lives of the widows in the community. Therefore, this research is important as it focused on identifying the reasons for the poorest living conditions of the widows at the particular division.
