Title: Pedagogical Requirements for ESL Instructors in Online Language Teaching: Practices and Perceptions from a Sri Lankan University
Authors: Navaz, A.M.M.
Abstract: This paper covers pedagogical requirements of the online teaching. Despite its importance, the focus on pedagogical requirements of online language teachers has been a neglected area in online teaching. Even though there has been a sudden pressure from the education administrators on shifting to online teaching, the passage provided for the teachers for shifting is minimal, especially in countries like Sri Lanka where the use of technology for language learning is not a usual practice. The change to online teaching was imposed only after the sudden halt of onsite education which was hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Zoom became the household word overnight, especially among the universities and private fee levying schools in Sri Lanka. Within a year of the introduction of Zoom, it spread to schools to conduct classes for school children as there was no improvement in the pandemic situation. In this case, teachers were struggling to adapt to the new technology too. This paper presents the feedback obtained from the ESL instructors at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka pertaining to the challenges they faced and the strategies they adopted to keep the online teaching rolling. In the study, it was revealed that most of the instructors had issues in handling the online classes and they declared that they did not have any kind of training for online teaching. Thus, the educational authorities should think of training ESL instructors for the reason that teaching the language online is a challenge.

Title: A critical review of motivation and satisfaction in sports volunteerism: contributing factors, relationship, and models of motivation and satisfaction
Authors: Weerakoon, W. M. R. K.; Abeysinghe, Chaminda; Vitharana, Sarath
Abstract: The current study illustrates sports volunteer motivation, satisfaction, the interrelation between motivation and satisfaction, contributing factors for motivation and satisfaction, and introduced models for sports volunteer motivation and satisfaction. This study has used thematic analysis to acquire final results, and also relevant literature has been identified using the Purposive Random Sampling method. The data were collected from relevant research Journals, Text Books, Websites, and other relevant academic works. The first part of the study uses for defining motivation and satisfaction. The second part of the study critically analyses the contributing factors for sports volunteer satisfaction. The third part was dedicated to analyzing the relationship between motivation and satisfaction. The fourth part looked at the models of sports volunteer motivation and satisfaction, which the authors introduced in the sport management field, and a final part dedicated to raising research gaps in motivation and satisfaction. The results show that intrinsic and extrinsic benefits and organization elements (Training, Organisation support, Quality of work environment, and Intergroup relation) directly influence sport volunteers'‟ negative or positive motivation and satisfaction. Therefore, sport volunteer managers should consider the volunteer expectation of intrinsic, extrinsic, and organizational elements when planning a successful volunteer program. Also, volunteer managers need to be considering the socio-demographic and economic factors for preparing their volunteer programs since motivational and satisfaction factors continually change along with those factors. Future researchers can further investigate the relationship between motivation and satisfaction and how it depends on socio-economic factors.

Teaching grammar: a comparison between Schools and University

Title: Teaching grammar: a comparison between Schools and University
Authors: Navaz, A. M. M.; Hanaan Khaathoon, M. F.
Abstract: Teaching grammar has been a concern for teachers for the reasons that grammar is an important area in language learning and also is considered a difficult skill to handle in ESL classrooms. The objective of the study is to identify the methods of teaching English grammar at a university and two selected schools. For this purpose, fourteen teachers from two local schools and ten university teachers at the university were selected using a convenient sampling method to participate in this research. Mixed methods research design comprising a questionnaire survey and classroom observation was used to collect data. In addition to these methods, further data were also obtained from focused group discussions with teachers. The findings revealed that there are differences in the approaches adopted by teachers to teach grammar in the university and schools. The university teachers had more understanding of grammar teaching approaches, whereas the school teachers lacked that knowledge. The study also revealed that adopting the most effective method of teaching grammar to the students depends on some factors such as the topic of the grammar taught, the language proficiency of the students, and the availability of teaching resources. The study suggests that further research should be conducted with students of different language proficiency levels to investigate the impact of these two approaches to teaching grammar using an experimental research design.
