Title: Fashion discourses: the influence of east dress on European fashion
Authors: Gayathri, Madubhani Ranathunga
Abstract: Generally, the term “Fashion” is used for European dresses. Fashion is a fast-moving industry
in Europe that caters to consumers from the high-street towards haute couture (High Fashion)
market level. The European fashion industry drives with seasonal trends which show rapid
changes every two weeks. European fashion consumers are a stakeholder in the cycle of desire
that is created by trendsetters of the Fashion Industry. East dress simply does not consider
seasonal changes as fashion. The dress of the East resembles mainly the culture. Sustainability,
heritage, cultural norms, and values, national identity is key in East dress which shows ethnic
identity which enables gives exotic clothing tastes to European consumers. Practically, the East
has been embraced by Europe as a visual delicacy, creating concrete issues of dress in Fashion
academia. It is expected to analyze the Western interpretation of East dress by comparing
dresses created by Western Fashion designers who were inspired by East dress characteristics.
The research is qualitative data analysis. The reliability of data is much concerned. Data were
collected from primary and secondary sources. Selected designers from the history of Western
fashion were studied. Original dresses which were created by European fashion designers that
are displayed at the world museums were observed. East dress characteristics are discussed
according to Sri Lankan historical dress examples. Selected dresses of Asia, Saree, cloak,
Kimono dress details, and their inspiration power are discussed. Scholarly written research
papers, books, websites, fashion blogs were read and collected relent data. It was found that the
East dress has achieved a different interpretation in Europe. Actual usage has been excluded in
Europe. It was noted that European designers pay more attention to asymmetric, fluid drapery
effects of East dress. East dress became an art piece in Europe. It can be identified as a unique
selling point of Asian dresses.

for the study. The objectives of the study are to identify the existing level of job satisfaction of
public Librarians and to discuss the professional development activities in relation to the public
librarians. Eight (8) parameters were considered to measure the level of job satisfaction. They are
pay, promotions, professional development, job security; job Autonomy, Job Involvement,
Training Opportunities, and Work Environment. The study sample comprised thirty two (32)
respondents representing all public libraries in the district. The semi-structured questionnaire with
five-point Likert scale used to collect the quantitative data for the study. All respondents were
given the chance to participate in the study and responded. Findings revealed that 82% of the
public librarians were satisfied with their jobs in public libraries in Anuradhapura District, North
Central Province (NCP) of Sri Lanka. However, it is an indication that some of the public
librarians are either satisfied or dissatisfied with their job satisfaction as per the aforesaid factors.

Title: Managing the craft industry of Sri Lanka: a study of the history of the governance, policies and political interventions with reference to Molagoda pottery, Weweldeniya cane and Pilimathalawa brass work
Authors: Karunaratne, P. V. M
Abstract: The craft revival sees craft increasingly recognized as a growing industrial sector with benefits
linked to educational, cultural, and economic development policy agendas of the country. The
―Vistas of Prosperity and Splendor‖, the policy statement of the SLPP government in 2019
emphasized the value of uplifting the selected traditional craft sector of Sri Lanka. This paper
brings awareness of the policy decisions that place the craft sector in Sri Lanka from the Kandyan
historical period today. Considering the craft sector perspectives of the government as policy
initiatives it situates the disciplines and practices of crafts within their institutional support
networks, organizational contexts and acquires attention to the role of individuals in driving
agendas. The paper focuses on the policies and political interventions on crafts development.
Moreover, it is clear that today‘s political interest in craft is no longer limited to a creative
industry‘s agenda and the ‗demands‘ specific to the creative economy. The research reveals that the
government initiatives on craft education and skill schemes that are geared towards broader
economic and educational goals to sustain the national economy of the country must be properly
addressed to the coupled economic stability of the country with a creative economy

Difficulties faced by the ESL Learners in using English passive voice in written communication: a study based on the Students of NAITA, Trincomalee, Sri Lanka

Title: Difficulties faced by the ESL Learners in using English passive voice in written communication: a study based on the Students of NAITA, Trincomalee, Sri Lanka
Authors: Abdul Halik, Abdul Farook; Fouzul Kareema, Mohamed Ismail
Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the difficulties faced by English as a Second Language
(ESL)learners of National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), Trincomalee in
using passive voice in written communication. This study focused on passive constructions,
written communication, and difficulties faced by the learners in using the passive voice in writing.
In this study, 35 ESL learners of NAITA, Trincomalee were selected as a sample population and
two quantitative instruments: writing test and questionnaire were used to collect primary data. The
findings of the data analysis of the writing test show that several students (82%) had used only
active voice in the test although their writing was perfect. Further, the findings of the data analysis
of the questionnaire show that most of the students (34%) like grammar but they face difficulties
in learning passive voice and in using it in their writing. Lack of training in writing practice is one
of the major reasons for finding difficulties in using passive voice in writing. This problem can be
overcome when grammar is taught inductively, and more emphasis is given to four skills.
Moreover, the ESL curriculum and activities should be designed based on the application of
grammar in verbal communication.
