Title: A Comparative study on cadmium phytore mediation efficiency of two aquatic macro physics in Anuradhapura district
Authors: Muthukumranaand, S; Nawas, MF
Abstract: Phytoremediation is a low-cost, eco-friendly approach where metal-accumulating plants are used for the remediation of soils and wastewaters polluted with toxic substances, which is a topic of global interest. This capability is useful in removing toxic heavy metals and trace elements from contaminated soils and waters. Cadmium (Cd) has been implicated as a causal factor contributing to the CKD, and the elevated levels of Cd were reported in waters, soils and in a range of foods commonly consumed by rural communities within the Anuradhapura district. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare heavy metal removal potential of the native submerged rooted plant Aponogeton with that of the free floating Eichornia, to determine the Bio Concentration Factor (BCF) values of both plant types and to compare these values with the corresponding values obtained from a source at Matara district, which is a location in the CKDu non-endemic area. The sampling was done during April-May, 2016.
The sample preparation and digestion were done using standard methods. Chemical analysis for Cd was done by atomic absorption spectrometry method. Results showed that the Cd concentrations present in both plant types and the BCF did not differ significantly (P<0.05) between the two locations. But both soil and water samples taken from the vicinity of A. crispus plant differs significantly (P<0.05) between the two districts. The mean BCF values for Cd is comparatively high in both plant species in Matara district (E. crassipes 3.092, A. crispus 2.365), and E. crassipes has larger BCF values than Aponogeton crispus. It has been suggested to expand the study spatially and temporally to get more samples and hence for better results.

GPS Based medi –safe application using android devices

Title: GPS Based medi –safe application using android devices
Authors: Kirushalini, M; Naleer, HMM
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibility of creating an android application which provides its users with a more efficient way of managing their medical needs than existing application. The project looks at existing applications and sees what they are lacking on and how this project could improve on their mistakes. The project tries to provide a more efficient platform for doctors to communicate with patients and also implement other features which are not very common to give the application an edge over existing applications.
The application developed in this project was developed in Eclipse. The application uses a Sub Query Language database to store user information such as their personal information, medications and appointments. It allows users to find doctors and add them as contacts or make an appointment and allows the user to search for doctors by their name or by location. Finding doctors by location is a very efficient way of finding doctors as the user can find doctors in their area. Unlike most medical applications this application allows patients to book appointment without having to talk to the doctor. The doctors can fill out appointment slots they want to be available and then the user can come along and book one of those appointment slots. This application also provides the users with scheduling tools which allow the users to plan out their week relatively easy, they can enter in their medications and when they want to take them and application will be send them a notification. The result of this thesis is a fully functioning Android application which provides users with an efficient way to find and communicate with doctors, book medical events, and be reminded of medical events.

Phishing e-mail filtering mechanism using heuristic technique

Title: Phishing e-mail filtering mechanism using heuristic technique
Authors: Madushanka, MKP; Hanees, AL
Abstract: Phishing is a new type of network attack where the attacker creates a replica of an existing Web page to fool users (e.g., by using specially designed e-mails or instant messages) into submitting personal, financial, or password data to what they think is their service provides’ Web site. In this research paper, I proposed a novel method to phishing email filtering by the use of end-host based anti-phishing algorithm, which is call Link Guard and content based filtering by the use of knowledge discovery by utilizing the generic characteristics of the hyperlinks in phishing attacks. These characteristics are derived by analyzing the phishing data archive provided by the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG). Because it is based on the generic characteristics of phishing attacks, Link Guard can detect not only known but also unknown phishing attacks. Our experimental analysis verified that Link Guard is effective to detect and prevent both known and unknown phishing attacks with minimal false negatives. This research also showed that Link Guard is light weighted and can detect and prevent phishing attacks in real time.

A Study on binding of hydroxamic acid derivative to DNA: experimental and computational approach

Title: A Study on binding of hydroxamic acid derivative to DNA: experimental and computational approach
Authors: Jumani, ALF; Safeena, MIS; Senthilnithy, R
Abstract: Small Gilligan molecules bind to DNA and artificially alter and/or inhibit the functioning of DNA. These small ligand molecules act as drug when alteration or inhibition of DNA function is required to cure or control a disease. The binding interaction of N-phenyllauroylhydroxamic acid with CTDNA was measured by four methods, (i) UV spectroscopic method, (ii) fluorescence spectroscopic method, (iii) viscosity Measurement and (iv) molecular docking. It showed that Nphenyllauroylhydroxamic acid-DNA complex has high absorption intensity than compound only and significant quenching of fluorescence intensity for the N-phenyllauroylhydroxamic-DNA complex. The values of binding constant, K, is 3.43x 10-2nd Stern Volmer constant Ksv is 4.8 x102 ng-1μl obtained by UV absorption and fluorescence spectral methods, respectively. The binding interaction is further confirmed by the increase in relative viscosity of CT-DNA. The molecular docking of N-phenyllauroylhydroxamic acid with the DNA confirmed to be a strong binder with DNA in the mode of groove.
