Abstract: The goal of the current study was to gather&#xD;
the traditional, phytochemical, and nutritional&#xD;
advantages of the essential medicinal plant kohila&#xD;
(Lasia spinosa), an indigenous vegetable with great&#xD;
potential in Sri Lanka but little commercial acceptance&#xD;
because of its high fiber content. The plant has&#xD;
alkaloids, and its leaves in particular include tannins&#xD;
and phenolic chemicals. Fresh shoots, leaves, corms,&#xD;
and rhizomes are often grown and used as eatable food&#xD;
since they are regarded as financial assets as well.&#xD;
People use leaf extract as the least expensive source of&#xD;
multivitamins to increase their nutritional value. The&#xD;
kohila plant offers a wide range of therapeutic benefits,&#xD;
including anti-helminthic, anti-bacterial, antiinflammatory, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-oxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-tumor activity. This study covers the&#xD;
prospective application of kohila in the nutritional&#xD;
concern due to its various therapeutic and nutritional&#xD;
properties.</description>

Abstract: The coastal region of the Ampara district&#xD;
of Sri Lanka has a considerable number of perineal and&#xD;
seasonal estuaries which are poorly used for&#xD;
aquaculture. The reason they are not being used in&#xD;
aquaculture is the lack of awareness and inadequate&#xD;
information on the water quality parameters of these&#xD;
estuaries. Thus, the research has focused on&#xD;
investigating the water quality parameters of brackish&#xD;
waters in the Ampara district of Sri Lanka, with&#xD;
particular emphasis on their suitability for aquaculture.&#xD;
Water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), water and&#xD;
soil pH, salinity, conductivity, and total dissolved solids&#xD;
of the available estuaries or coastal wetlands in the&#xD;
Ampara district were investigated to assess the sites&#xD;
suitable for aquaculture for a full year from January to&#xD;
December 2018. Ambient temperature and&#xD;
precipitation were also recorded over the course of the&#xD;
year. The annual differences between the maximum and&#xD;
minimum level of water temperature, salinity, pH,&#xD;
specific conductivity, total dissolved solids, DO, and soil&#xD;
pH were 24.2 - 36.2ºC, 0.9- 38.2 ppt, 6.2 - 8.9, 55.5 - 62870&#xD;
µs/cm, 35.5 - 37800 mg/L, 3.2 - 13.4 mg/L, and 4.0 - 7.2&#xD;
respectively for the whole year of 2018. The water&#xD;
quality parameters investigated in the full year indicate&#xD;
that the culture of brackish water shrimps would be&#xD;
suitable in Arugam lagoon (salinity, 17.1±3.3ppt) and&#xD;
Komari river mouth area (salinity, 21.4±8.4ppt), and&#xD;
culture of freshwater fish would be better in Oluvil&#xD;
(5.3±3.5ppt), Addalaichenai- Konawatte and River&#xD;
mouth (4.1±1.2ppt), Periyamuhathuwaram&#xD;
(3.2±1.2ppt), and Urani lagoon (5.1±3.0ppt) in all year&#xD;
long. As the seasonal lagoon of Sainthamaruthu&#xD;
(9.8±2.6) is unpredictable and recorded with highly&#xD;
variable water quality parameters, it would be very&#xD;
risky to culture the shrimps and may be suitable for&#xD;
euryhaline fish culture. The Sinnamuhathuwaram&#xD;
lagoon (9.3±3.9 ppt) is suitable for euryhaline fish&#xD;
farming during the period between November and&#xD;
March, while it is suitable for shrimp cultivation from&#xD;
April to October. Pottuvil Lagoon in Kottukkal would&#xD;
be suitable for freshwater fish farming from November&#xD;
to April, and for shrimp farming from April to October.&#xD;
Our study concluded that the lagoons of Komari- II and&#xD;
Arugambay are the ideal sites for culturing shrimp in all&#xD;
year long.</description>

Abstract: -Efforts to optimize protocols, explore&#xD;
alternative substances, and advance research are critical&#xD;
to making tissue culture a sustainable and cost-effective&#xD;
method for mass plant propagation. Hence, the present&#xD;
study was conducted at the Floriculture Research and&#xD;
Development Unit of the Royal Botanical Gardens,&#xD;
Peradeniya. The objective was to evaluate the potential of&#xD;
using Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) and Kesibissan&#xD;
(Cyclea peltata L.) as nutrient additives and gelling&#xD;
medium for Anthurium tissue culture. The experiment&#xD;
was designed using a Complete Randomized Design with&#xD;
seven treatments, and each experiment was replicated 15&#xD;
times.The number of leaves, shoots and roots per plantlet and the&#xD;
explant height were measured. Based on the results, our study&#xD;
found that supplementing Aloe vera and Kesibissan&#xD;
extracts had a substantial impact on the growth&#xD;
parameters of Anthurium explants after one month of&#xD;
incubation period. Kessibissan extracts performed well on&#xD;
Anthurium explant growth, especially in terms of the&#xD;
number of leaves, roots, and plantlet height. Meanwhile,&#xD;
the treatment involving 700 ml of MS media and 300 ml&#xD;
of Aloe vera extract proved to be the most successful for&#xD;
Anthurium, resulting in improved leaf, root, and shoot&#xD;
development. Overall, our findings give useful&#xD;
information for improving the growth of this attractive&#xD;
plant and may have applications for horticultural&#xD;
operations, highlighting the potential benefits of natural&#xD;
extracts in plant tissue culture.</description>

Abstract: The developing floriculture industry seeks&#xD;
domestic pot ornamental plants as it is not further&#xD;
being luxury in effort. Several endemic flowering&#xD;
plants have the potential to introduce as pot&#xD;
ornamental. But creeping growth attributes of this&#xD;
endemic plants should be tested with growth retardants&#xD;
and physical manipulations before introduce those&#xD;
plants into the floriculture market. A shade house&#xD;
factorial experiment was arranged in eight treatment&#xD;
combinations of pinching/non-pinching and various&#xD;
Paclobutrazol concentrations (0 ppm, 15 ppm, 30 ppm&#xD;
and 60 ppm) with eight replicates for each treatment.&#xD;
Paclobutrazol was applied in twice, two weeks intervals&#xD;
while, soil drenching and pinching was done. Results of&#xD;
the experiment disclosed that the plants showed better&#xD;
performances in growth retardation and other&#xD;
characters measured with the pinching and&#xD;
Paclobutrazol concentrations increasing, but degree of&#xD;
leaf deformation was increased when increase the&#xD;
concentration of Paclobutrazol. It was observed that 15&#xD;
ppm Paclobutrazol applied plants showed balanced&#xD;
growth retardation and acceptable plant characters.&#xD;
Application of Paclobutrazol in concentration of 15&#xD;
ppm along with pinching caused considerable&#xD;
suppression of height that makes increased&#xD;
floricultural value for the Henckelia plants.</description>
