Authors: Saras, S. Mufliha.; Alibuhtto, M.C.
Abstract: The scholarship examination is a highly competitive examination for grade five
students and this examination allows the students with exceptional skills to move on to
better schools. This study was designed to investigate the factors influencing on the
performance of grade five students in scholarship examination. Primary data used for
this study was collected through questionnaire. One hundred and fifty students who set
scholarship examination in 2013 were selected using stratified random sample method
based on types of schools in Akkaraipattu zone. A binary logistic regression model was
used to identify the influence factors such as the parent’s socio economic level, school
types, sex, mother’s employment and self-assessment while using dependent variable
as scholarship exam performance. This study concluded that the parent’s socio
economic level, type of school and mother’s employment are the important significant
factors on the performance of scholarship examination. However, the self-assessment
andsex of students are not significant factors on the performance of scholarship
examination.

Authors: Mufassirin, M.M.M.; Hanees, A.L.
Abstract: Designing and implementing commercial systems based on Wireless communication
technology has been an enormous area of interest among many researchers and
developers. In a country like Sri Lanka the task of collecting meter reading data related
to energy consumption of each and every consumer is a monotonous job. Thus, this
paper proposes design and implementation of a Global System Mobile (GSM) based
Automated Energy Meter Reading System (AMR) that aims to reduce this monotonous
work by automating the process of collecting data from consumer’s electricity meter.
The integration of the embedded Microcontroller (Energy Measurement System) and
GSM modem provides the meter reading system with some automatic functions that
are predefined. The AMR continuously monitor the energy meter and send the data to
the energy provider using the GSM modem as well as send alerts to the consumer via
SMS and Email regarding the energy consumption of a particular energy meter unit. In
case of failure of payment of dues by a consumer the energy provider can disconnect
the power supply of consumer from the energy station. With this automation, a
software application with database management system has been proposed in this
project to facilitate the bill generation and transmission of data via SMS and Email at
the server end.

Authors: Shurfa, M.J.F.; Rifana, A.B.F.; Rizvi, E.M.J.M.; Haroon, M.H.
Abstract: Allelopathy is the production of chemicals (allelochemicals) of a plant which can influence the growth and development of another plant. Medicinal plants and marine algae are known to produce a range of secondary metabolites with a variety of biological activities. The present work was carried out as a preliminarily study to investigate any possible herbicidal activity of the medicinal plants and seaweed extracts. Radish seed germination bioassay which is widely used in the detection of allelochemicals, throughout the world was carried out to examine 6 medicinal plant extracts and 2 seaweed extracts for seed germination inhibitory activity. Out of 8 extracts tested, Acalyphaindica (kuppaimeni), Phyllanthusniruri (Keelkainelli), Ipomoea carnea (Mampannchan), and Passifloraedulis (Passion tree) have shown significant seed germination inhibitory activities, which might be due to the allelochemicals present in those plants. In the case of the methanol extract of Ocimum sanctum (thulasi), Pisoniagrandis (Ilachchavattai or LettaCochchi) and Halimeda discoida, percentage seed germination enhancement and increased root length compared to the control (distilled water) were observed. Further studies are in progress with the hope of isolating natural products that are responsible for the above allelopathic effect of the medicinal plants and seaweed extracts.

Authors: Ahamed, Rifkhan, M.I; Jahufer, A
Abstract: The purpose of this research study is to check the overall job satisfaction associate with
demographic factors: Gender, Age, Ethnicity, Civil Status, Experience, Educational
Qualification and Bank Types in Ampara region government and private bank
employees. To collect required data for this research study 180 questionnaires were
personally administered among the respondents and received only 105 questionnaires
which indicate the 58.33% response of the respondents. Simple random sampling
method was used to select the sample. The appropriate statistical tests: Reliability test,
Principle Component Analysis, Independent Samples t-test and ANOVA test were used
to analyse collected data. The independent sample t-test result reveals that, there is a
significant different between gender and type of bank job satisfaction whereas there is
no different between civil status job satisfaction. Male employees have more job
satisfaction than female employees and also private bank employees have more job
satisfaction than government bank employees. Furthermore, ANOVA result concludes
that, there is no significant different between age, ethnicity, educational qualification
and year of experience and job satisfaction.
